This is an entry for the annual poster contest for Imagine RIT, defined by the university as a festival that "showcases the creative and innovative spirit of RIT students, faculty, and staff."

My poster design was selected the winner out of 75 entries. The community narrowed it down, then RIT President David Munson chose the final design.

Prompt

Imagine RIT is an all-encompassing creativity fair. How could I make a poster to capture it all?

Solution

I gathered inspo and predicted what stakeholders and a diverse audience would take delight in. Then, it was all about grit and determination to get it done!

First, a bit about the event…

Imagine RIT is like a giant science fair, only it isn't just about science! It's also about engineering, the creative fields, game design, business and many other disciplines at the university. I had to find a way to incorporate these elements into something cohesive and distinctly "RIT." We are a bunch of nerds here, and we're proud of that!

Building an innovation supercomputer

I narrowed down what I wanted to make as early as possible, which made the next steps a bit easier. Inspiration came from the insides of fancy gaming PCs, and industrial piping. In general, I wanted it to look more “cool” and broadly appealing than anything…nothing avant-garde, but that’s okay!

I began to fill the insides with items connected to various disciplines, as a way to appeal to the breadth of projects shown at the event. I made sure to include a microphone representing the performing arts, which is important to President Munson. The idea is that the objects in the pipes come together to form the orange “creative juice” that fills the RIT container. I like to think it tastes like citrus, mango, and pineapple.

Project Reflections

Great!

Overall I think it's visually and conceptually a success.

Meh…

I could have reduced some visual clutter. It's quite maximalist.

How can I improve?

Let me rest on my laurels for this one! Please?

In all...

It was incredibly validating and exciting to have the support of the RIT community, and a little part of me still rides the high of knowing my art is cemented in the university’s history. I learned that my hard work and dedication could reward me in amazing ways!
