Beyond Fashion 2023

Motion Graphics

What happens when the legacies of Massimo and Lella Vignelli and fashion collide? Beyond Fashion, a glamorous student-run show! The event, sponsored by RIT’s Vignelli Center for Design Studies, was the 3rd of its kind. And my class designed all of the motion graphics that complemented the collections. This was no mundane final– there were real stakes and real clients.

Prompt

While solo designers had cohesive collections, fashion club Fabrick was eclectic. How could we represent each outfit while still honoring the overarching Vignelli theme, “The Grid is Everything”?

Solution

We embraced their differences by showing off our own talents and styles, but also used a uniform color palette and geometric shape language to bring things together.

My largest contribution was a credits sequence that played on repeat on the smaller screen. While other groups were paired with single designers, ours had the challenge of a club’s worth of them—all making different things.

In addition, all of us created short animations to be shown on the big screen. Their appearances were based on our collaborators’ 12 outfits.

Design is One

From our group’s personal styles to the club’s differing designs, making a cohesive look wasn’t easy. I helped alleviate this by creating a color palette we could use. The red is the iconic Vignelli super-warm red. The show’s overarching theme was “the grid is everything,” so that also informed our designs. Here's some of the inspo:

Panic sets in, but the show must go on!

While the animations were created in After Effects, we set them up in Resolume to allow us to video-DJ. When we realized we were woefully unprepared during our rehearsal, we spent the night optimizing our file so we could easily click to play groups of clips when each model walked by.

Some in the club dropped out suddenly or changed their designs last minute, but that’s the nature of working with students. And the venue’s screen wasn’t the most cooperative, either, but eventually it all came together.

Project Reflections

Great!

I liked our communication and cooperation within the team and with the club.

Meh…

The organization of the project (not on our end, but in general) was anxiety inducing and it came rght down to the last second.

How can I improve?

We did the best we could with what we were given, but I still wish things were more visually cohesive between us teammates.

In all...

Beyond Fashion was a uniquely stressful, realistic, creative, and fun endeavor. My teammate’s willingness to pitch in and collaborate made things a breeze. It was also fascinating to work with other types of creatives who use different mediums but ultimately have the same goal: to put on an amazing show!
